Republicans vacating the Capitol are dumping a big spring cleaning job on Democrats moving in. GOP leaders have opted to leave behind almost a half-trillion-dollar clutter of unfinished spending bills, There's also no guarantee that Republicans will pass a multibillion-dollar measure to prevent a cut in fees to doctors treating Medicare patients. The bulging workload that a Republican-led Congress was supposed to complete this year but is instead punting to 2007 promises to consume time and energy that Democrats had hoped to devote to their own agenda upon taking control of Congress in January for the first time in a dozen years.
With a jaundiced view, one might think this is an attempt to stonewall or bottle-up the new Democrat majority.
We in The Whirlpool, however, choose to believe that "thinking Republicans" (no oxymoron intended) know that Democrats can be trusted with the spending bills more than the Spendaholic Republicans.
Tester and Webb Have won Their Races by Way More -- However Slim the Margin -- Than Bush Allegedly "Won" Florida in 2000. The Republicans Should Concede Defeat as Bush Demanded of Gore and Get Out of the Way. The Voters Have Elected a Democratic Senate. The GOP Shouldn't Act Like a Loserman. (Check Out the Final Senate Votes Here.) The Dems Should Announce a Transition Team to Plan for Dem Control of the Senate.
Our citizens have entrusted control of the United States House of Representatives to the Democrats.
Just two years ago, the world wondered how we as a nation could have possibly returned control to George W. Bush and the Republican Party. Two years later, we showed them that we figured out we had screwed up.
There is still a possibility that the Democrats will control the Senate as well, an accomplishment that was completely out of the question to all but the giddy and dimpled optimists.
What a great day for America. What a great day for Democrats.
UPDATE:
The Associated Press has declared Tester the winner in Montana, and Webb has claimed victory in Virginia. This gives the Democrats a 51-49 majority.
After Robert Dole incredible career carried on with so much class, it is a shame that his wife would end up embarrassing the Senate by being such a rude, butt-face!
